| Suwon, full of live history and tradition, is the provincial capital of Gyeonggi-do, and the gateway to Seoul (the capital of Korea), approximately 30km to the south. It occupies an area of 121.14 square kilometer, which consists of 1.3% of the whole territory of Gyeonggi Province. The population of the city is 1,082,271 with 395,615 households as of Dec., 2006. |

Suwon has abundant cultural heritages like Hwaseong Fortress. The fortress is designated as an international cultural asset by UNESCO and its architecture is famous for its scientific and strategic competence.
Also, Suwon is an industrial and economic city where high value-added and conventional industries are being developed harmoniously. Over the centuries, Suwon has been the heart of Korean agriculture and bio science with the agricultural research cluster composed of ¡® Rural Development Administration¡¯, ¡®SNU¡¯s Agriculture & Life Sciences College¡¯ and the world-class biotechnology companies.
Furthermore, because of enthusiastically fostering electronic, electric, textile and petrochemical industries through systematic and focused collaboration, Suwon has been the main driving force behind the incredible growth of Korean economy over the last 4 decades. As of Dec., 2005, the number of companies registered in Suwon was 56,743 with 286,283 employees. Especially, globally recognized enterprises like Samsung Electronics and SK Chemical are the main contributors of Suwon¡¯s economic growth. In 2006 alone, Suwon¡¯s trade volume reached US$6,694 Mil., with US$3,331 Mil., in export and US$3,363 Mil., in import. Presently, the city is actively transforming its industrial structure into a knowledge-based one by nurturing ICT, BT and NT as future growth engines.
In the meantime, to take advantage of Suwon¡¯s characteristics, Suwon aims to become an educational city as well as a healthy community in which different classes of all generation can coexist. Also, , Suwon is set on creating a green city where nature and humans coexist and achieve balanced development with infinite growth potential through developing into an advanced provincial model city using the capacity of 1.08 million citizens.
